The Bills tried this type of experiment with former stud WR4 Gabe Davis. They moved him to an elevated pass-game role, and it didn't work. He couldn't get open nearly as much as he needed to.

Bills must avoid elevating Coleman to classic X/Z role; Gabe Davis experiment failed.
The Bills must be careful not to elevate Coleman into a classic X or Z role staying mostly stagnant near the sideline, as he is not ready to win against more man coverage and safeties regularly over the top. He cannot become a target-magnet either. The Bills previously tried this type of experiment with former WR4 Gabe Davis, moving him to an elevated pass-game role, and it did not work; Davis couldn't get open nearly as much as he needed to. Coleman's growth depends on the Bills continuing to deploy him in the curated slot and in-line alignment strategy rather than expanding his role beyond his optimal usage.
