All of this points to a heavier workload for Walker in the coming weeks. This is not the first time head coach Andy Reid has leaned heavily on a running back. He did so with Kareem Hunt in 2017 during his rookie year when Hunt finished that year with 325 touches and led the league in rushing.

Injuries to Thornton and Rice position Walker for expanded role under Reid's proven RB-heavy system.

With Tyquan Thornton expected to miss most or all of the regular season due to ankle dislocation and Rashee Rice dealing with a hamstring injury, Walker is positioned for an even heavier workload in the coming weeks. Head coach Andy Reid has a history of leaning heavily on running backs when needed: Kareem Hunt had 325 touches as a rookie in 2017 and led the league in rushing, and Brian Westbrook had nearly 370 touches in 15 games in 2007 while leading the league in yards from scrimmage. Reid's willingness to feature the running back both on the ground and through the air when the back's talents demand it fits the Chiefs' current situation.
