Jake Ferguson is another player holding the Cowboys back from being on the right side of another winning trend around football right now. Not only are tight ends supposed to have a significant role in the middle of the field passing game, but being a reliable checkdown option against pressure looks is valuable as well. Ferguson is neither of these things right now.

Ferguson failing as middle-field target and pressure checkdown option.

Ferguson is holding the Cowboys back from following the NFL trend of attacking the middle of the field; he is neither fulfilling the tight end's role in the middle of the field passing game nor serving as a reliable checkdown option against pressure looks, both of which are critical to modern NFL offenses. This deficiency contributed to the Cowboys' inability to consistently execute the middle-field attack that separated them from great offenses.
