They do wanna see whether or not someone drafted that high and that young is capable of being a backup or even a starter at some point. But not as a starter, at least not for the immediate future. If Jameis were to play really badly in a couple of weeks in a row and they lost two in a row, I think it's a different conversation. Not only did they sign Jameis, but they extended him, and they gave him real money in a two-year extension.

NeutralDepth Chart

McCarthy acquired as developmental backup; Winston's extension makes him starter.

Backup QB acquired by Giants; team evaluating whether high draft pick can function as backup or potential future starter; unlikely to see significant playing time in immediate future unless Jameis Winston plays 'really badly' for multiple weeks; Giants' two-year extension of Winston with real money indicates team's commitment to him as primary starter.
