Payton's fearlessness and mobility make him a long-term option worth developing now.

Cole Payton, a Day 3 rookie from the 2026 NFL Draft, could eventually warrant playing time and the source makes a strong case the Eagles should be starting him now instead of Tanner McKee. Payton offered intrigue in offseason practices and limited preseason action; he has a penchant for being overly aggressive which could lead to turnovers and growing pains, but there's admiration for his fearlessness and ability to run around. The source argues that if the Eagles concede 2026 isn't their season, they should play Payton to develop a long-term factor, whether as a backup or starter.
