From the article

He originally went to Auburn under Gus Malzahn and did NOT develop because he is NOT a Cam Newton or a Nick Marshall. Malzahn's offense revolves heavily around the run game and DEEP SHOTS. This is the OPPOSITE of McDaniel's timing-and-precision offense. Malik ended up at Liberty under Hugh Freeze, who runs similar concepts to Malzahn.

Willis's Auburn and Liberty systems didn't prepare him for McDaniel's precision timing offense.

Willis's development has been stunted by his offensive system history. He was corrupted by Gus Malzahn's Auburn offense (which revolves around run game and deep shots with virtually no check-downs), then moved to Hugh Freeze at Liberty who runs similar concepts. Both systems rely on hitting deep shots at high probability rather than precision timing-and-accuracy throws. This is the opposite of McDaniel's timing-and-precision offense, which Willis now plays in. Michael Silver wrote an article on how Malzahn ruined Jarrett Stidham, and Willis faces similar developmental challenges.
