Giants switched to McCarthy after Jaxson Dart's season-ending knee injury, surrendering a fifth-round draft pick to acquire him. McCarthy is not the runner Dart is, but gives offensive coordinator Matt Nagy access to the running-play portion of the playbook that the offense was built around. Head coach John Harbaugh stated McCarthy has the gameplan down and the offense has been tailored toward his direction, though Harbaugh would not commit to McCarthy being the permanent starter, saying 'Life is day-to-day, minute-to-minute. There's really no guarantees.' The move gives the Giants the opportunity to be the offense they want to be rather than the offense they have to be with Winston.
