He was supposed to be one of the best young backs in the league... He's currently barely on pace for that amount of touchdowns and you can't lead the league in yards from scrimmage if you are barely on the field... The talent is there, but the situation is a nightmare.

Hampton's 2026 collapse: fumbles, limited carries, and committee role derail lead-back expectations.

Hampton was drafted 22nd overall with expectations to be the Chargers' lead back, but has underperformed significantly in 2026. NFL insider Jordan Schultz predicted he would lead the NFL in scrimmage yards with 12+ touchdowns, but he's barely on pace for that touchdown total and rarely on the field. An ankle injury sidelined him for nearly half his rookie season, but he was effective when available, averaging 4.4 yards per carry with five touchdowns and 82 total yards per game. In 2026, his production has collapsed: he's exceeded 15 carries just once, his yards-per-carry average has dropped nearly a full yard, and he's lost two fumbles in the first two weeks. Mike McDaniel's three-back committee approach has prevented him from establishing rhythm.
