McCarthy starts for Giants; brings QB run game back but only a month with team.
J.J. McCarthy has been tabbed as the Giants' starting QB this week after a midweek change. Ed Valentine notes McCarthy brings a jolt of energy and reintroduces the quarterback run game to the offense—a key element the Giants built around Jaxson Dart but lost under Jameis Winston. While McCarthy is not as elite a runner as Dart, he is young, athletic, can run, and has a big arm. However, McCarthy has only been with the team for about a month, so comfort with the entire offense remains uncertain. He flipped last year in Minnesota and was No. 3 on the Vikings' depth chart, so there is more upside with McCarthy than Winston but also risk.
