Purdy was trying to throw it out of bounds, and Bates made a good play. "I thought maybe Christian Kirk on the scramble was going to be there," Purdy said after the game. "But then towards the end, as I was getting ready to throw. I was, 'like no it's not' and so I just went to throw it away by the sideline and then Bates all of a sudden came across and made a good play."

Purdy's late-game interception to Bates was a bad throw, though Bates made a good defensive play.

Purdy threw an interception to Falcons safety Jessie Bates III late in the 49ers' 29-20 loss to Atlanta; Purdy intended to throw the ball away out of bounds on the play but Bates made a good play to intercept it. Purdy acknowledged post-game that he thought Christian Kirk might be available on the scramble but ultimately decided to throw it away by the sideline. The source notes this was a bad throw, though Bates probably doesn't make that play nine times out of ten.
