STACKED’s take
Hutchinson solid rotational backup; faces Watson competition for roster spot.
Xavier Hutchinson, the sixth-round pick (205th overall) wide receiver from Iowa State, has proven to be a capable rotational receiver who can block and contribute on special teams. He serves as the backup for WR1 Nico Collins, allowing the offense to maintain its physicality at the position when Collins is out. Hutchinson is employed between the numbers on slant and dig routes per PFF's reception depth chart, and his two-touchdown day against Baltimore helped solidify him in spread offense packages with four or five receivers. However, he faces challenges to his role and potentially his roster spot, as veteran Justin Watson remains a factor in the position group. If Hutchinson can win the spot and produce another consistent season, he should earn a team-friendly contract to stay as a depth piece.
