Daily Norseman on J.J. McCarthy
From the article
McCarthy didn't have either the lows or the highs that Murray had. Mostly a steady diet of shorter passes, which reminds me a lot of what his training camp looked like last year.
STACKED’s take
McCarthy plays it safe with short passes; needs to challenge himself downfield.
McCarthy didn't have either the lows or the highs that Murray had, mostly running a steady diet of shorter passes, which reminds Blake Brandel of what his training camp looked like last year. He spent more time with the No. 2 group and had fewer downfield attempts than Murray. The competition may be decided by which quarterback progresses most, and for McCarthy that means growing his skillset to be better able to aggressively take what the defense gives him—showing more touch, layering ability, and accuracy with his throws while processing faster. He needs to get out of his comfort zone and challenge himself by trusting what he sees and attempting more difficult throws when available, which will probably mean making more mistakes, but that is what training camp is for.
