Skylar Thompson... I think he got misused by Mike McDaniel... he had a very tight role for those guys as contributors and then when he had to put them in the field and expand what they did, he was afraid to do so... Thompson played so well that there was a thought that maybe he would compete with Mason Rudolph... I just decided finally that I'm going to play my game and not really listen to... Mike McDaniel cramped my style

Misused in Miami; showed enough in Pittsburgh preseason to be preferred backup option.
Bob Harris argues Thompson was misused by Mike McDaniel in Miami, who kept reserves in tight roles and became conservative with play-calling. Thompson went to Pittsburgh and played well enough in preseason to compete with Mason Rudolph, though the Steelers stuck with veteran Howard as a draft investment. Thompson's own assessment: he decided to play his game and not cramp his style like McDaniel did, showing up on tape in preseason. Harris suggests the Steelers saw enough to prefer Thompson over Anthony Fagnano (years away from backup role) and Tyler Huntley (won't embarrass but won't win big games).
