McCarthy wasn't bad but doesn't appear to be on the same level as Murray when it comes to generating explosive plays, which are huge in any NFL offense. McCarthy appears to be a step behind the eighth-year veteran in terms of processing and decisiveness, despite his experience advantage within O'Connell's offense. After six full-speed practices, the source doesn't see how McCarthy is going to make up enough ground to win the QB competition. McCarthy showed inconsistency from a young player still in the development phase after missing significant time due to injury in his first two seasons; he had some solid throws (good deep ball to Felton, strike to Myles Price, sideline hole shot to Jones) but also had multiple incompletions, late throws, under-throws, and a strip-sack.
