Mahomes is managing the tension between his naturally aggressive, competitive style and the need to be cautious with his recovering knee. He acknowledged the challenge: "I'm trying to hold back because I'm a competitor, and I like competing. All of a sudden, I'm running and cutting back and trying to pitch the ball. It's trying to keep yourself from doing stuff like that, but when it's fourth down, and you want to try to make a play happen, you try to make a play happen."
