Lost the Vikings starting quarterback competition to Kyler Murray despite showing growth in the offseason. The third-year Michigan product, drafted No. 10 overall in 2024, missed his entire rookie season with an ACL tear and started 10 games last year with a 6-4 record, finishing with 1,632 passing yards, 11 passing TDs, and 12 interceptions. Quarterbacks coach Josh McCown noted McCarthy needs to "take that next step as a passer and really be able to develop all the clubs in his bag," suggesting the team sees room for improvement before he can compete for the starting role.
