Coach was quick to shift to D.J. Rodgers, highlighting his all-around game and very important skill of run blocking. It sounded like things were still very even between the two UDFAs, and one could argue that superior blocking is more important at the bottom of the TE depth chart than receiving ability.

Rodgers' run-blocking edge keeps fourth TE competition with Trigg competitive.

The UDFA TE is competing with Michael Trigg for a potential fourth tight end spot after Princeton Fant's season-ending injury. While Trigg has showcased superior pass-catching ability, Rodgers' all-around game and particularly his run-blocking skills have impressed offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, making the competition between the two UDFAs very even. The Cowboys may not even keep a fourth TE given FB Hunter Luepke's emergency option capability, but Rodgers could secure a practice squad spot or 53-man roster position if he performs well in preseason games.
