Irving's YPC fell from 5.4 in 2024 to a horrific 3.4 last season, and he had just one start with more than 72 rushing yards in 10 starts. Rather than treating him as an obvious backup, Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles has referred to Gainwell as the '1B' option.
STACKED’s take
Irving's YPC collapsed to 3.4; Gainwell's arrival threatens workload at RB21 ADP.
Irving finished his rookie season as RB14 but cratered last season, becoming one of the more disappointing mid-round selections. While a foot sprain and shoulder/AC joint injury contributed to his decline, even when supposedly back to full strength later in the season, Irving wasn't the same player and lacked explosive plays. His YPC fell from 5.4 in 2024 to 3.4 in 2025, and he had just one start with more than 72 rushing yards in 10 starts. The offseason addition of Kenneth Gainwell, who was fantastic with Pittsburgh last season, compounds the problem. Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles has referred to Gainwell as the '1B' option with plenty of first-team snaps while Irving recovers from an offseason procedure. Given Irving's injury history, a 50/50 carry split is possible. Tarracciano prefers waiting for Gainwell's value at RB36 over Irving at RB21.
