Field Gulls on Matt Hasselbeck
From the article
Matt Hasselbeck, one of the most beloved former players for the Seattle Seahawks, recently helped with the ongoing research on CTE... "They need guys like me. They need people who are feeling good to step up to the plate and volunteer."
STACKED’s take
Hasselbeck volunteers for Boston University CTE research to advance living diagnosis methods.
Three-time Pro Bowl QB participated in CTE research study at Boston University, undergoing two days of scans and tests to help develop methods to diagnose chronic traumatic encephalopathy in living patients. Hasselbeck is currently healthy and feeling good but volunteered despite suffering three concussions before college and additional concussions during his playing career. He noted that while QBs receive hard hits, many of his former teammates in the trenches and on special teams suffered more collisions, motivating his participation to support those who "had my back." The study compares former football players with non-contact-sport participants diagnosed with Alzheimer's to identify key differences between CTE and Alzheimer's, as CTE can currently only be officially diagnosed after death.
