Zappe replaced Klubnik in the preseason game and threw two interceptions, one returned 47 yards for a touchdown by Ayden Garnes. The second interception was not entirely his fault, as receiver Arian Smith let the ball bounce off his hands. Zappe's poor performance, combined with Klubnik's strong showing, significantly diminished his chances of winning the backup quarterback job.
