Drones was released by the Packers on August 14 after just one preseason appearance; the UDFA QB signed for only $5,000 in guarantees (10th among 12 UDFA QB signings) and struggled in the fourth quarter against Pittsburgh with one incompletion on his only pass attempt and three sacks, including one on a screen where he failed to release the ball. Head coach Matt LaFleur's stated preference for three quarterbacks on the roster made Drones expendable.
