STACKED’s take
Kaliakmanis' strong preseason debut and arm strength boost his QB3 prospects amid Mariota injury.
Seventh-round rookie QB Athan Kaliakmanis made a strong case for the Commanders' QB3 job in his preseason debut. He started fast with 33 yards on his first two throws to rookie Antonio Williams (16 yards) and tight end Colson Yankoff (17 yards), followed by a 20+ yard completion to Jacoby Jones. He finished 6-of-10 with 87 passing yards and no touchdowns. His arm strength was evident throughout, showing conviction, athleticism, and a level of comfort that defied his inexperience. The source notes there was far more good than bad in the Day 3 selection from Rutgers, and it would be a big surprise if he didn't find his name on the 53-man roster. With Mariota exiting with a possible non-contact leg injury, Kaliakmanis could potentially stabilize the backup quarterback spot.
