The two backs are nearly the same age and play in similarly high-powered offensive situations behind good quarterbacks and complementary weapons. Their statistical seasons last year actually looked quite similar when compared directly, just with the underlying week-to-week trend reversed, one starting hot and fading, the other starting slow and rallying. The real counterargument, which is largely conceded, is that the other back has a genuine receiving-game efficiency advantage, and Williams's own history of a serious multi-ligament knee injury remains a legitimate differentiator, even though he's missed little additional time since recovering.
