Bennett was the leader to be the backup heading into Saturday's game, getting snaps with the other starters when Matthew Stafford was rested during practice, and started the preseason game. However, Ty Simpson made a big push to win the backup job over Bennett with his strong performance. Bennett is running out of time to prove himself to other NFL teams; his contract with the Rams expires after the 2026 season, and the consensus among NFL experts is that the Rams won't re-sign him and will use Simpson as their backup until Stafford retires. Bennett needs every chance to prove he's a good player to get signed to a new contract next offseason, but if he doesn't get to play, his chances of getting signed next offseason will likely decrease.
