McCaffrey is the only player to have more than 400 touches in a season since the league expanded to 17 games. He's also the only person to have over 400 touches in the past decade. McCaffrey is on the list twice... There's no data on Le'Veon Bell, the last person to have a 400+ touch season, because he was ineligible to return in 2018 after failing to report to the Steelers.

Historical 400-touch seasons show decline; McCaffrey's workload may signal durability risk.

Historical precedent suggests McCaffrey's 400+ touch workload from last season may portend decline. Le'Veon Bell was the last back to exceed 400 touches (2017) but was ineligible to return in 2018 after his holdout. Shaun Alexander dropped from 1,880 yards in a full season to 896 yards in 2006 after missing six games and never played a full season again, retiring three years later. Larry Johnson was never the same after his 400+ touch 2006 season, missing half of 2007 and never exceeding 875 yards afterward. Chris Simms noted 'history isn't on McCaffrey's side' despite acknowledging McCaffrey is an outlier as a player.
