STACKED’s take
Cowboys' scheme unlocked Pickens' potential; elite YAC on in-breaking routes.
Pickens was transformed by the Cowboys' scheme after three seasons in Pittsburgh. In Pittsburgh, he ran go routes 31.4% of the time (9th-highest) with 43 targets and 760 receiving yards off go routes (both league-leading), but ran in routes just 6.2% of the time (2.8% in final season). Dallas unlocked his potential by deploying him on in-breaking routes: in his first season with the Cowboys, Pickens ran in routes a career-high 11% of the time, with 38% of his usage on in-breaking routes. On those routes, he averaged 7.9 yards after the catch per reception (5th-most among WRs), with 501 receiving yards on in-breaking routes (only Puka Nacua had more). This scheme fit made Pickens great and provided a massive boost for Prescott.
