Stribling is one of the few cases where I do think the preseason performance matters, because it was clear Kyle Shanahan wanted to test the rookie and see how he responded in a way that's unusual for preseason games. Stribling's strong response doesn't mean he'll be the No. 2 WR ahead of Deebo Samuel in Week 1, but it does seem Shanahan is preparing the rookie for the No. 3 role, health permitting.

Stribling's strong preseason work suggests Shanahan preparing him for No. 3 WR role.
Stribling didn't start Thursday's game but came on as the No. 3 WR behind Deebo Samuel and Demarcus Robinson and quickly caught three passes for 25 yards on the opening drive, then added a 21-yard gain from Mac Jones late in the first quarter before dropping a potential TD deep down the left sideline. He played a total of 14 snaps (five targets, 4-46-0). Kyle Shanahan clearly wanted to test the rookie and see how he responded in a way that's unusual for preseason games. Stribling's strong response suggests Shanahan is preparing the rookie for the No. 3 role, health permitting. Stribling came out of the game listed as day-to-day with a shoulder injury.
