Sixth round pick Backup quarterback 5-3 record...Brady looked like a better fit. Still there's no way you can look at this and conclude that it was an obvious decision in the moment to pick Brady. In fact if you pick him and are wrong, it's a career-ending decision...Did Belichick realize Brady would end up going down as arguably the best quarterback ever when he made the decision in 2001? I doubt it, but you must realize that in the moment this was an incredibly gutsy call.

Brady was a sixth-round pick backup quarterback with a 5-3 record who replaced Drew Bledsoe in 2001. Though he looked like a better fit for Belichick's offense than Bledsoe, the decision to start him was incredibly gutsy and career-risking for Belichick at the time; if wrong, Belichick would have been fired and ridiculed for decades as the coach who benched a Super Bowl starting quarterback for a sixth-round pick. Brady ultimately went down as arguably the best quarterback ever, validating Belichick's controversial personnel decision.
