By declining to play in the final preseason game and sustaining a multi-week ankle injury, McCarthy has likely ceded the QB2 role to Carson Wentz. If Wentz wasn't already the de facto QB2, he will be soon, and it will be difficult for McCarthy to climb out of the QB3 hole once the season is underway. McCarthy has also sabotaged his chances at competing for the QB2 job by forgoing critical reps during a time when backups get essential practice work.
