McRee's 5 rec, 60 yards, 1 TD preseason shows developmental tight end potential.

McRee is a prospect liked as a possible developmental tight end; more pass catcher than blocker, though he showed a willingness to block. He flashed receiving potential in the preseason, totaling five receptions for 60 yards and a score. He did most of his yardage damage in the Jets game but secured the touchdown in the final game against the Bills. McRee had a drop this summer and a couple of instances where he and the quarterback didn't appear to be on the same page on route running. While not ready to make the roster, the Steelers can stash him for a year and see where he's at a year from now.
