Penix in Week 1 starter race despite knee injury recovery; status uncertain

Penix is recovering from a left knee injury that ended his 2025 season and did not play in any preseason game. He remains in contention for the Falcons' Week 1 starting quarterback role against the Steelers on Sept. 13. Falcons GM Ian Cunningham stated he has not ruled out whether Penix would be ready for Week 1, noting that Penix's work in recovery and the staff's plan have put him in position to be part of the starter conversation.
