Windy City Gridiron on Jahmyr Gibbs
From the article
With David Montgomery off to Houston and Detroit's backup RB in flux, I'm expecting a record-breaking year for the dynamic back. With David Montgomery moving on from Detroit, the Lions' backfield belongs to Gibbs, and he'll step up into a larger role than he had last season (which was already huge).
STACKED’s take
Gibbs primed for record-breaking OPOY season with Montgomery gone and expanded role
Multiple Windy City Gridiron staff members predict Gibbs for 2026 OPOY. Bryan Orenchuk expects a record-breaking year with David Montgomery departed to Houston and Detroit's backup RB in flux, noting Lions head coach Dan Campbell has made it clear the offense will go through Gibbs. TJ Starman emphasizes Gibbs will step into a larger role than last season (which was already huge) with Montgomery's departure. Gary Baugher Jr. notes Gibbs is primed to be the focal point in Detroit and had a comparable offensive season to Bijan Robinson (who finished 4th in 2025 OPOTY voting) but received no votes himself; that changes this year. Lester A. Wiltfong Jr. adds that if his usage increases as expected, Gibbs should win Detroit's first OPOTY award since 1997.
