Mendoza, the No. 1 overall pick by the Raiders, won the Heisman Trophy last season and led Indiana to its first undefeated season, first No. 1 ranking, and first national championship. The key question is whether the Raiders will have patience to let him develop behind Kirk Cousins—as the Chiefs did with Mahomes, or the Chargers and Packers with Rivers and Rodgers—or press him into action as a rookie. Tom Brady, part owner of the Raiders, played a big role in the decision to draft him. In training camp, Mendoza has shown impressive throws but also mistakes, including an 80-yard interception return for a touchdown in a preseason game against the Texans. Coach Klint Kubiak said there is "plenty to clean up" and "plenty to get better at."
