Samuel had six catches for 48 yards and a touchdown on seven targets in the 49ers' 27-7 Week 1 win over the Rams; he also added a 12-yard run and a pair of kickoff returns for 74 yards. Shanahan hasn't been shy about using Samuel as a runner—he had 1,143 rushing yards and 20 touchdown runs over his first six seasons with the 49ers—and Samuel might be part of Shanahan's Christian McCaffrey preservation plan.
