Gates believes McCarthy is likely to see action at some point this season given the injury history of both Murray and Wentz. While McCarthy has dealt with injuries and hasn't been spectacular on the field, Gates notes the Vikings' development plan may not have been ideal—McCarthy was expected to run Kevin O'Connell's complex offense like a ten-year vet as a rookie. Toward the end of 2025, when the Vikings simplified the offense, McCarthy looked significantly better. McCarthy is the only QB under contract beyond this season.
