Mayer's top-five tight end deal premature given limited track record, though structure protects Raiders.

The source was shocked to see Mayer get a contract extension that made him the fourth-highest (now fifth-highest) paid tight end in the league, and even more shocked that the extension came ahead of the season. While the source understands Mayer can have a bigger role in Kubiak's offense and the Raiders believe in him long-term, the source questions the timing, suggesting the team should have waited four games to see how he performs in the new offense before handing out a big contract. The source argues that the body of work the 2024 second-round pick has done so far does not justify top-five money at his position. However, the source gives credit to the organization and John Spytek for the contract structure: it's essentially a one-year extension with two club options, all guaranteed money is in 2027, and Vegas can cut him with a post-June 1 designation during 2028 or 2029 offseasons while only taking on about $2.3 million of dead cap if things don't go well.
