If you lose the faith of your veteran teammates to lead and be a difference maker at the only position on offense that has a ball in his hands every single down, it goes downhill very, very quickly. And it did last year for the Vikings... Them going out and getting Kyler is the confession that he's not on their timeline yet.

Lost veteran locker room confidence; Vikings brought in Kyler as admission he's not ready to lead.

McCarthy has lost the confidence of veteran teammates in the locker room; the source states that when a young quarterback loses the faith of veteran players to lead and be a difference maker at the position that touches the ball every down, 'it goes downhill very, very quickly. And it did last year for the Vikings.' The veterans—Darnold, Jones, and now Kyler—are signaling through their presence that McCarthy is not ready to lead the franchise. The Vikings' acquisition of Kyler Murray is explicitly framed as an organizational admission that McCarthy is not on their timeline.
