I cannot imagine, if I told Peyton Manning, 'Hey, you're not going to play at all, the first snap of the regular season is going to be your first live snap,' I don't think he would have been very happy about that.

Dungy cites Manning as example of QB needing preseason reps before regular season.

Tony Dungy used Peyton Manning as an example of a franchise quarterback who would not have been comfortable with zero preseason snaps before his first regular-season game. Dungy noted that when he coached Manning, the quarterback would play approximately three quarters in the third preseason game to prepare for the regular season, contrasting with current practice where about half of NFL teams don't play their starting quarterback in preseason at all.
