Thornton's multiple receptions highlight his role in Mahomes' misdirection attack.

Thornton was featured as a key target in Mahomes' play-action and misdirection concepts against Miami. On a misdirection play, Thornton was the target coming across the field at the sticks; with edge rusher Chop Robinson in Mahomes' face, Mahomes bought time for Thornton to clear Robinson, allowing a sidearm pass completion for a first down. Thornton also came down with a sideline catch on a two-man route concept where Mahomes faked out the cornerback to open the window.
