Heading into the season, many of his teammates noted that Deebo was coming into the season with a chip on his shoulder, given how his 2025 season with the Washington Commanders played out... 'Deebo is as fast as anybody at his size that I've been around. And he still has that.'

Samuel's motivation from 2025 struggles and elite athleticism per Shanahan support a breakout narrative.

Samuel entered 2026 with significant motivation after his 2025 season with Washington and going unsigned deep into the offseason before signing with San Francisco. Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Samuel's chip on his shoulder and noted that when the ball is in his hand, 'Deebo is as fast as anybody at his size that I've been around. And he still has that.' Shanahan also emphasized Samuel's improved conditioning and consistent routine heading into the season, suggesting the narrative of decline has been overstated.
