Hogs Haven on Marcus Mariota

Mariota ranked top backup QB; 4 TDs, zero turnovers in two starts

Marcus Mariota is ranked as the top backup quarterback in the NFL by The Athletic. Over two appearances this season, he has completed 63.8% of his passes (19th in NFL), averaged 6.3 yards per attempt (23rd), and thrown four touchdown passes while avoiding turnovers. The source notes that despite a mediocre running game and rookie play caller, Mariota has a strong case as one of the best backups in the NFL, particularly given the Commanders' 1-2 record and the elite defensive coordinator he faced (Mike Macdonald's Seahawks defense, which had given up 30+ points only three times since 2024).
