Yahoo Sports NFL on J.J. McCarthy
From the article
It starts with the cadence. As simple as that sounds, it sounds easy, doesn't it? But it starts there. There's a rhythm to that. Then you take the personnels, and you gotta know all the personnels. Then you gotta know all the formations, then the motions, then the shifts. Then you gotta know the play. Then you gotta know what the defense is doing.

McCarthy learning Giants system; Nagy says backup role is realistic goal, not immediate field time.
McCarthy was traded to the Giants mid-season and is 10 games into his NFL career. Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy said the focus is to get McCarthy up to speed on learning the Giants' offensive verbiage, cadence, personnels, formations, motions, shifts, and plays before addressing mechanical tweaks. Nagy emphasized the steep learning curve: "It starts with the cadence. As simple as that sounds, it sounds easy, doesn't it? But it starts there. There's a rhythm to that. Then you take the personnels, and you gotta know all the personnels. Then you gotta know all the formations, then the motions, then the shifts. Then you gotta know the play. Then you gotta know what the defense is doing." The coaching staff is balancing getting McCarthy ready without overwhelming him, with the realistic goal of making him a backup rather than getting him on the field immediately.
