Fields' route-running growth and zone awareness signal possession-receiver upside despite speed limits.

Fields had a coming-out party, scoring his first NFL touchdown and hauling in a huge 40-yard gain. While his speed in the open field is a limitation—he won't run past NFL defensive backs once they turn and run with him—he's already showing impressive growth as a route runner, manipulating route stems and throwing quick head and body fakes before his breaks. Combined with short-area quickness and a massive catch radius, he's developing into a tough cover as a possession receiver. He has a really good understanding of zone coverages and a natural knack for finding voids, which led to his 40-yard reception when he adjusted his route to maximize visibility to the scrambling Jameis Winston. On his touchdown, he ran a crossing route in a way that took full advantage of the traffic schemed into the play, with Darnell Mooney and Isaiah Likely creating a natural screen and Malik Nabers running a crosser in the opposite direction in a non-traditional mesh concept. The Giants are moving him around the formation, into the slot, and into motion; his upside as a blocker allows them to use him as a pseudo tight end and mismatch power slot.
