PositiveBreakoutAug 17, 2026
Chism's work ethic and practice intensity drawing comparisons to former Patriots captain Jabrill Peppers, known as one of the team's hardest workers. DeMario Douglas highlighted Chism's ability to practice with game-day intensity: 'To watch Chizz, he practices just like it's a game. That's great competition.' Douglas noted Chism's work ethic pushes teammates to be better and mirrors the standard Peppers set. As a rookie UDFA, Chism made the initial roster and finished with 4 catches for 95 yards and 1 TD; now building on that foundation in year two.
PositiveRoleAug 17, 2026
Second-year UDFA WR competing for roster spot in deep Patriots WR room; one of seven with realistic hopes of making 53-man roster but not challenging for starting role. Understudy to Mack Hollins; competing in second tier alongside Kayshon Boutte. WR coach Todd Downing praised his offseason work: 'I love where Efton's at. He put a really hard offseason in at work and it's paid off.' Downing noted Chism is more comfortable with offensive decisions, plays faster, shows better defensive recognition, improved strength, and refined route craft and play strength.
PositiveRoleAug 16, 2026
The wide receiver found a role on the Patriots last year and made it easy for the team to keep him around. This summer, that role has seemingly expanded. Chism has worked in with the first-team offense at both the Z and slot positions—even sharing the field with DeMario Douglas at times—and has often been called upon in run situations and in the red zone. Vrabel said, 'I think he's got a good skill set of being able to get in there and block, but also marry some of that with some of the run action passes. He competes. He always takes care of the guy. He protects the guy with the ball the best that he can, and I always see him looking to finish when he does not have the football in his hands, and continues to make big plays and show up when we need him.'
PositiveUsageAug 7, 2026
In 2025, Chism appeared in 10 games with 1 start, logging 128 offensive snaps (9.4% snap share) and 67 special teams snaps (12.2%). He caught 4 of 4 targets for 95 yards and 1 TD, averaging 23.8 yards per catch. His most notable performance came in the final two weeks when Kayshon Boutte and Mack Hollins were injured, catching three passes for 75 yards and his first career TD in blowout wins over the Jets and Dolphins. He also added a 20-yard catch in the wild card playoff win over the Chargers.
NegativeDepth ChartAug 7, 2026
Chism and Kyle Williams project as the sixth and seventh options at wide receiver for the Patriots heading into 2026. However, Chism has spent more time with Drake Maye-led units in summer, and preseason performance plus the uncertain status of trade candidate Kayshon Boutte will impact his roster outlook. His $1.013 million salary cap hit (consisting of $1.005 million base salary and $8,333 signing bonus proration) carries minimal guaranteed money.
PositiveRoleAug 5, 2026
With Romeo Doubs missing the session, Efton Chism was elevated to the starting wide receiver lineup. The sophomore's ability to line up all over the formation has made him a valuable presence in the wide receiver room. Chism was with the starting wide receiver group during the first period of 11-on-11s and often was on the field in Doubs' place alongside A.J. Brown and DeMario Douglas. His usage on Wednesday was definitively noteworthy, though his role evolution once Doubs returns remains to be seen.
PositiveRoleAug 2, 2026
Wide receiver Efton Chism is in his second year with the Patriots and has shown significant growth from his rookie season, according to veteran teammate Mack Hollins. Hollins said 'I think the biggest thing is now he's taken anything that he was with me doing last year, and he's molded it. And like I told him, take everything I do, and then change to what's best for you. And that's what I've seen him do. It's been it's been really cool to watch him grow not only as a player on the field, but off in understanding how to be a pro.' Chism will have work to do to make the 53-man roster again this season with the team adding A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs to the wide receiver room.
NegativeRoleAug 1, 2026
Entering Year 2 after making 53-man roster as UDFA, Chism appeared in 8 regular season games (3 catches, 75 yards, 1 TD) plus 1 playoff game (20-yard reception in Wild Card win vs. Chargers). His offseason focus shifted to mental preparation—mastering playbook details and film study to avoid feeling behind veterans. Wide receiver coach Todd Downing noted progression in understanding concepts and formations, with exposure last year when Mack Hollins was injured helping him move around different spots. Chism embraced the competitive WR room additions (A.J. Brown, Romeo Doubs) as motivation, stating competition makes everyone better.
