0:11Hey everybody, welcome to this edition of the Insiders.
0:13Patrick Claiborne here in the NFL LA newsroom. Ian Rappaport with us as well and Mike Garofalo live there from Commander's Camp.
0:20I want to say guys it's National Eat Your Vegetables Day.
0:23Ian, have you consumed vegetables today? Yeah, I had a portion of pasta with dinner.
0:28There was broccoli in it. So that counts, Mike?
0:31I think there was lettuce and tomato on that turkey sandwich earlier from that.
0:35Although I'm still not sure whether the tomato is a fruit or a vegetable.
0:39So just count the lettuce. Yeah, we'll count it.
0:42It consumes it. You're good. It's hard to do while you're on the road.
0:46Speaking of you being on the road, let's get to what is new today coming into the NFL LA newsroom.
0:52Changes abound on the Commanders offseason this season as David Blau is the coordinator of the offense.
0:58Of course, a down year led to some of those changes on offense, but Jane Daniels is looking forward, especially with David Blau as the coordinator.
1:06I'm done talking about last year, last year, last year.
1:09I'm moving on to this season and whatever happened last year is what happened last year.
1:13Can't do anything for me, but just continue to get it better.
1:17I helped out a lot, man. Just that relationship we have that we built since I've been here at first and we
1:24both grown a lot over these years. And now he kind of knows me, knows how I work, knows what buttons to
1:31push, how to push me, what I can handle, what I need to get to grow at and things like that.
1:37So it's been fun. Mark Jaden is laser focused there on the path ahead.
1:41He is. And he's focused on this offense right now.
1:44The offense is new. The scheme is new. A lot of the things they'll ask him to do are new, a lot
1:51more under center than we've seen from Jaden Daniels the last couple of years.
1:55Also, the play calls he's going to have to spit out in the huddle are a lot longer than they've been previously.
2:02But like he alluded to there, Blau, though he's the new O.C., is not new to him.
2:07He's not new to the building. He's been here the last couple of years as a offensive assistant coach, even served as
2:14the interim quarterbacks coach late last season before getting the promotion to offensive coordinator.
2:18So this spring has really been about those two leaning on their previous relationship as Blau now instills, installs an offense that's
2:25more along the lines of what we've seen really from Ben Johnson.
2:28I was in Detroit with Johnson a couple of years ago when he was still a quarterback, and he's still got that
2:35player's mentality that he's now bringing to being a coach.
2:38There's a lot of energy into what he is doing, and there has been a lot of energy on the field for
2:45Jaden Daniels and this offense, though maybe not today.
2:48Today was more of this speed that you're seeing right now because Dan Quinn, the head coach of this team said, here's how I'm going to approach minicamp.
2:56I'm going to allow my starters to go through walkthrough pace, and I'm going to let the live reps go to the
3:03twos and the threes because last year, Jaden, change the channel.
3:06I'm going to talk about last year right now.
3:09Last year, this commander's team, they had a lot of injuries, and when they went to lean on those twos and threes
3:16that they had to lean on, it didn't go so well.
3:19So Dan Quinn says, I want to get these guys extra reps, number one.
3:23And number two, we as a coaching staff, it challenges us to say, well, where are we with this guy?
3:29And do we need to bring him more along?
3:32Because we may need him during the season, just like we needed those guys last year and they weren't ready to go.
3:39So that has been the approach to minicamp. There's one more practice tomorrow.
3:43It's a very brief one, but Dan Quinn trying to get the most out of these three days here in Ashburn before
3:50the break for the summer to get this team ready, not just on the top line, but on the guys behind them
3:56that they're going to rely upon as they get into the season.
4:00And worthwhile to remind anybody who's maybe frightened by this approach that some teams elected to not have minicamp at all.
4:06So the Washington Commanders at least excelling in that capacity.
4:09Mike Garofalo will be back with him live there at Commanders Camp.
4:13We will get to Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals at day two of their minicamp after starting on Tuesday.
4:19Joe Burrow says he's had a familiar feeling looking back to previous teams that he's been on, but he was talked to
4:26reporters today was asked if there was any additional pressure on him going into this season.
4:31I hope so. I hope so. I think that's great.
4:34You know, put pressure on guys. I love it.
4:37I thrive in it. We'll find out who else does.
4:40I know that we have the kind of people that want to be in that spot.
4:44I want everybody talking about the Bengals. I want everybody talking about what I'm saying in my press conferences.
4:50You know, you go back and watch what I said before.
4:542019 season at LSU, you know, I feel very similarly about this team.
4:58You know, I'm so excited to get started and get moving.
5:01And I wish we would ramp this right into training camp so we can continue to improve.
5:06Because I feel like, you know, there's so much greatness that we're going to be able to achieve this year.
5:12I'm just excited to get going. Ian, what better way to summon that pressure than to look back at the greatest college
5:19offense of all time, arguably the score at almost 50 points a game.
5:23Yeah, there's something that happens when Joe Burrow does press conference.
5:26And it's not just that everyone listens and it's always big news, but it's really just that he tells the truth.
5:33He tells you what he's thinking. And sometimes it's not always what we want to hear.
5:38Sometimes it's say at the end of a tough season that included him coming back from a significant injury.
5:43Someone says, hey, do you ever wonder what it'd be like somewhere else?
5:47And he goes, yeah, sometimes I wonder. He usually sits up there and speaks his mind and is real.
5:53So listen up, Patrick. When Joe Burrow sits there and says this reminds him of one of the greatest college teams of
6:00all time, that he wants all of the smoke, that he wants the eyeballs on, that he wants the pressure, that this
6:07team is ready to go out and do it, that he feels they are ready and need it.
6:12That is newsworthy. What the Cincinnati Bengals did this offseason, what Duke Tobin and Zach Taylor and the Cincinnati Brass, who the
6:19organization has expressed confidence in for one more year.
6:21What they did was they went all in, right?
6:24I mean, they spent in free agency in a way we rarely see.
6:28Blay Maffe, Jonathan Allen, Brian Cook, a couple key cogs to help solidify this defense that was quietly improving at the end of last year.
6:36They went out and traded for Dexter Lawrence, one of the best defensive tacklers in the NFL and a kind of all-in move this organization never makes.
6:44They did a conversion of Joe Burrow's contract to create cap space, something they never do.
6:49They never leverage themselves to give themselves more space and basically give them room to operate and maybe go sign someone else.
6:56It is the kind of behavior that we never see from the Bengals, making you think this is the year for them.
7:02If it's not going to be this year, obviously we're going to see significant changes.
7:07Joe Burrow clearly thinks it is, and he wants us to keep our eyes on him.
7:12All right, well, I think Clyde Edwards-Alaire might be available.
7:15They can make a trade for Terrace Marshalls. Just bring the entire 2019 LSU Bengals.
7:19Bring them back together. Ian Rappaport there on the Cincinnati Bengals.
7:23Let's get elsewhere in the AFC, about, in fact, five miles from here near SoFi Stadium to the Bolt, the Chargers facility
7:29in El Segundo, where Jim Harbaugh shared his excitement and praise for his new offensive coordinator, Mike McDaniel.
7:35Double wow. I'll give that a double wow. Just the energy that he brings, the knowledge, you know, the way he communicates, teaches.
7:42It's infectious, that enthusiasm, that energy, plus the really just brilliant football mind.
7:46And so smart. I've been thinking about it like, okay, Justin's really smart.
7:50Mike McDaniel, really smart. Well, how smart are they, coach?
7:53I'm not smart enough to know how smart those two are.
7:56They're in a different level than me intellectually. And the more those two are together, which has been taking place the last
8:03eight weeks, bodes great for the Los Angeles Chargers.
8:06Omar Ruiz joining us now outside of the Bolt.
8:08We just heard the impact that he's had on Harbaugh.
8:12What impact has Mike McDaniel had there on the Chargers?
8:15Well, hey, Patrick, a couple of weeks ago, Justin Herbert told us that Mike McDaniel wants the ball out so quickly that
8:21he warned the receivers that if they don't get their head turned around in time to receive the throw, they're going to get hit in the face.
8:30It made me think of the old Brady Bunch episode where Marsha Brady gets hit in the nose with the football.
8:36Now, nobody got hit in the face with the football.
8:39Herbert saying those receivers responded accordingly in the Brady Bunch.
8:42It was Marsha, Marsha, Marsha for the Chargers this offseason.
8:45It has been McDaniel, McDaniel, McDaniel, Mike McDaniel firmly placing his imprint on this offense, on this organization.
8:51There you see him working with Justin Herbert. Part of getting the ball out quickly has been changing Herbert's footwork to get
8:57the ball out so quickly, to get the offense going, get the hands in the playmakers.
9:02Part of that process has been reducing Herbert's throwing this offseason into OTAs, ramping him up here in minicamp.
9:08And McDaniel saying there's a couple different reasons for that.
9:11Number one, he knows Justin Herbert's competitive greatness. He said if they're worried about the throws where he needs to lead receivers,
9:18he won't be able to perhaps concentrate fully on that footwork.
9:21So they take that off of Herbert's plate. Number two, just thinking about things differently going forward into the 2026 season, they
9:28want Justin Herbert at his best in December and January.
9:31So if they can reduce maybe some of the strain on his arm in May and June, perhaps that arm will feel even better later in this season.
9:39As far as the impact that he's had on the organization, I asked Jim Harbaugh about that.
9:45And he said they are fully bought in to Mike McDaniel.
9:48This is his offense. They are following his lead.
9:51They are learning from him. And it's not just for the offense, even on the defensive side of the football.
9:57They talk about McDaniel's energy, the way he feeds into them.
10:00Jim Harbaugh saying that he has high level conversations every day with Derwin James, what's working against the defense, what's not trying to get them better.
10:08And Harbaugh also talking about the way McDaniel pours into first time defensive coordinator, Chris O'Leary, the conversations they have at practice,
10:15the competitive nature with which they interact on the practice field.
10:18I asked O'Leary about that and he said, yeah, he enjoys that.
10:22He knows they're going to be challenged every day.
10:24The defense is going to have to be great every day.
10:28But then Mike McDaniel, the former head coach will pop into O'Leary's office office before they hit the practice field.
10:34He'll impart a little wisdom, a little different perspective on how to see things, maybe give them a little tips on what
10:41they're going to work on offensively so their defense can be a little more prepared.
10:45Mike McDaniel impacting his ways several different lenses in this 2026 offseason here in a minicamp.
10:50And they're hoping that pays off with large success, Patrick, in the 2026 season.
10:54Yeah, perhaps rejuvenated with the job change of the reduction of requirements, allowing Mike McDaniel to be comfortable and do more for the Chargers.
11:02Omar Ruiz there outside the bolt in El Segundo.
11:04Thank you, Omar. Yeah, I'm scataboo is not known for half measures unless we're talking about a shirt.
11:10He tells me how he's attacking his path to get back on the field when we come back here on the insiders.
11:17And Jordan loves personal quarterback coach has been with them since eighth grade.
11:21The two on what they've learned and where they still need to go in an interview with our insiders coming up next on NFL Network.
11:28Joining me, Ian Rappaport and our good friend Stacy Dales is Steve Calhoun, the personal quarterback coach for Packers star quarterback Jordan Love and Jordan Love himself.
11:36We've got a lot to get to here as we talk to both of our guests.
11:41But first, Jordan, you have been through OTAs. You have been through mini camp, obviously expectations pretty high in Green Bay.
11:48Tell me how it was and where you think you guys are as a team.
11:52Man, it was good. We attacked OTAs. I know the guys are excited just to be back with each other, start building
11:59that team chemistry, everything that goes with it. And, you know, working our way up to, you know, what's next with training camp.
12:06So I know guys are ready. They're going to attack this break and we'll be locked in, ready to go.
12:12And Jordan, you never really can get away from football too far, right?
12:16You're there with Steve, your longtime mentor. Does that go all the way back to Steve, Jordan as a freshman?
12:22And what was Jordan as a freshman like? What is what he's like now as an NFL superstar?
12:28Yeah, it was it was a summer of his freshman year going into the sophomore years when we were able to connect
12:34and you know, his head coach, you know, reached out to me who also coached another USC quarterback, Kobe Kessler reached out
12:41and said, hey, I have another one, another good one that I need you to put your hands on and start to train.
12:48And so that's where it all started. Steve, I want to go back to you for a second.
12:54So, you know, Jordan was was obviously a Packers traded up for him, but a late first round pick, not a ton
13:00of late first round picks achieve the level of success he has.
13:04And I think for a lot of people, considering that he waited for so long behind Aaron Rodgers was a little bit of a surprise.
13:12What was it like for you watching him go from just to be honest, relatively unknown college player to what he's become now?
13:19Yeah, well, I mean, Jordan's always put in the work from day one, you know, now going on 14 years together.
13:25You know, I've seen his maturation. I see how much time he puts into the details of it.
13:30I'm a very detail oriented coach. And, you know, he always takes it and applies it.
13:35So I've seen it just year after year after year.
13:38So I myself, I wasn't surprised with the success and that he's having now and how he was able to just to kind of fill the shoes.
13:47I don't know, say fill the shoes of Aaron Rodgers, but definitely step in and be the next Packers quarterback.
13:53And he has absolutely stepped in Jordan as the next Packers quarterback in a fantastic way.
13:58Obviously you guys are there at the change the game foundation camp and obviously the armed and dangerous football academy.
14:04Jordan, you've taken so many things from Steve over the years, but you've honed your craft.
14:09And I know recently you talked about your footwork and your really fluidity in the pocket.
14:13What have you targeted specifically this off season to keep going up to that next level?
14:18Yeah, like you mentioned, you know, those are some of the small things that I want to, you know, focus on.
14:25But when me and Steve get back out here, start working in the off season, any break we get, it's about getting
14:31right back to the basics, to the fundamentals, getting back to that drill work we do and just building my foundation and keeping it crisp and clean.
14:40So when I get back with the team, you know, I don't miss a step.
14:44Jordan, your receiving core looks a little bit different this year.
14:48Obviously, Romeo Dobbs has gone to the England Patriots, but you've also seen a couple of the really good young receivers.
14:54Jaden Reed, Christian Watson, both get big time contracts.
14:57And I think, you know, I think it's fair to say Matthew Golden is someone who a lot is expected of.
15:03Can you assess your receiving core and then give me your thoughts on two of your guys getting big time contracts this off season?
15:10Oh, it's great. I'm happy for both those guys.
15:13Anytime somebody, you know, has a payday, it's, it's a blessing.
15:17And it's all about the work they put in the type of people they are in the building.
15:22And, you know, now it's about time to just go back out there and produce on the field.
15:28But, you know, like we mentioned, we, we lost a couple of guys in our receiver room, happy for those guys and where they're going.
15:35But we still got some great weapons, Christian, J Reed, Golden.
15:39So we got some weapons and once we get tucked back healthy, we'll be a full strength.
15:44Steve, what makes Jordan love an elite quarterback in your mind?
15:47I just think the attention to details. I think that's when you see the elite players, no matter what sport it is,
15:54you know, like Lionel Messi last night. I think it's just attention to details, their, their football IQ, the love for the
16:00game, understanding that you're really going to have to cut something out of your life to put that extra time into your craft.
16:08And I think he's done a great job of balancing that, you know, he has a beautiful wife and beautiful daughter now,
16:14but he's still out here right now, ready to work.
16:17You know, we're going to get a workout in right after this, after this interview.
16:22So the work doesn't stop, but I think the attention to details has allowed him to be one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL.
16:29You know, Jordan, you spend, you know, the entire off season in Green Bay and then take a little break.
16:36Then the entire regular season in Green Bay, learning a lot from some really good coaches from Alifleur on down.
16:42We also have, as you mentioned, the kind of basis for all of this with Steve.
16:47How do you weigh the different coaching and do, do you kind of blend it all?
16:51Or is it, you know, one way here, one way over here?
16:55Like, how do you kind of treat the two different coaching expertise in your life?
17:00Yeah, you definitely try and blend it all together.
17:02You know, I've been working with Steve for a long time.
17:06I know a lot of the coaching points we talk about and the stuff I try and focus on.
17:12And obviously this stuff is more technique driven on just playing quarterback.
17:15And then obviously when we get with the team, it's more, you know, play driven.
17:20How we're, how we're calling plays, how, you know, I'm seeing the game.
17:24That's when me and Matt get together and talk about things.
17:27But, you know, I love just taking coaching and trying to implement everything people tell me.
17:32And, you know, never think I know it all and just try and keep finding ways to improve all the little details I can.
17:39And, you know, Steve's a great guy that holds me accountable and tries to push me to another level with everything I do.
17:46So it's just, it's always trying to find that, that blend with all the coaching points.
17:51I'll tell you what, Jordan, if I'm a little kid at this camp and I get you as a mentor and sit
17:58in film sessions with you as a mentor, and I get the expertise of Steve, I'm pretty pumped.
18:03Steve, tell us about this camp and Jordan's involvement.
18:06Yeah, we started the Change the Game Foundation quarterback, the Change the Game Foundation a year ago.
18:11And it's just for underserved kids who just don't have the financial means to attend camps.
18:16So when my good friend and my director of my foundation, John Conte, brought this idea to me about change the game
18:23and being able to give back to kids. And the first thing I thought about was, okay, let's do a quarterback camp
18:30and let me have Jordan come in. So that's, you know, we started that last year.
18:34This is the second annual camp that we will be doing.
18:38And looking forward to year after year, just being able to give back to the kids and Jordan's such a big name
18:45and a big quarterback in the NFL. A lot of these kids look up to him.
18:49So just to be able to have him out there on the field with myself and then in the classroom and breaking
18:56it down kind of like a day by day blueprint of how he prepares for a game on Sunday.
19:02Just all those details, kind of like a look under the hood of what you need to do every day.
19:08Not only take care of your body, but how much film study, how much time you got to spend with your teammates to really be a successful quarterback.
19:17So I know the kids last year were absolutely blown away with the amount of detail that he does, you know, from Monday to Saturday.
19:24So it's just unbelievable to have him here being part of, you know, my foundation.
19:29Jordan, last thing for me, you could be a lot of places in the middle of June.
19:34You got a month or so until the work starts in football.
19:38Everyone's trying to get away. You could be a lot of places.
19:41Why is it important that you were here? Not not talking to us, but getting ready to do this camp in Anaheim this weekend.
19:49Man, it just comes back to trying to help Steve out.
19:52You know, he's he's been helping me for so long, but pouring into me.
19:56And we talked about wanting to start this camp last year.
20:00You know, I was I was like, of course, I would help.
20:03You know, he also comes to my camps that I do.
20:07So we try to help each other out. But anytime you get a chance to just be out there with some of
20:13the youth and some of the kids who's going to be the next generation, give them some some of the game that
20:20I learned over the years and some little coaching points.
20:23You know, I know it's going to go a long way.
20:26I remember when I was a kid coming to some of the camps with some NFL players, and I still remember all that stuff.
20:34So it's a it's a great opportunity. Great time for the kids to be around me, ask me questions and hopefully, you know, be the next NFL player.
20:42Change the Game Foundation QB camp this weekend in Anaheim June 20th and 21st.

20:58This is what's new today coming into the NFL L.A.
21:01Newsroom. Commander's quarterback Jane Daniels expressed no interest in rehashing the five and 12 injury riddle season they had last year.
21:08Daniel said he loves and is excited about playing in David Blouse.
21:11New offense added, quote, I want to go out and be intentional with everything that I do.
21:16Meanwhile, Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow made it clear the team thrives on the pressure that comes along with competing for a championship
21:23so much so that he invoked the memory of the 2019 LSU Tigers that won every single game on their way to
21:30a college football playoff national championship says they can be great this year.
21:34It's time for rapid reacts here on the insiders.
21:37Here's how it works for those who are uninitiated.
21:39We're going to hear some sound for some players and coaches and our insiders are going to provide some context surrounding the things that we hear.
21:47So let's do it starting with Emeka Buka coming off a strong rookie season now finds himself without the leadership of longtime Buck Mike Evans today.
21:55The second year star asked about how the team needs to step up with a new offensive coordinator in time and a longtime vet out of town.
22:03I think, you know, just changing leadership when it comes to Zach Robinson coming in.
22:08There's not there's more new philosophy that we've installed.
22:11And I think that, you know, with losing Mike kind of finding that that new leadership and obviously Chris has done the leadership role at a high level.
22:19But, you know, he can't be the only one with a voice.
22:23So I think other people stepping up, whether it be me or K.
22:27Jay Dotton or, you know, even Bucky, even though he's not, you know, necessarily in everything right now, I think finding that
22:34new sense of leadership and being able to form an identity early so that we know what we're going to when the season comes around.
22:41And this is the way it has to go for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
22:45They did not want to lose Mike Evans and not want to see Mike Evans go to the San Francisco 49ers, made
22:52a really strong offer to keep him in the end.
22:55He decided to leave. So the Tampa Bay Bucs have some really, really talented young receivers that Chris Godwin and the rest
23:02of the leaders are going to have to get in line from Jalen McMillan and Tez Johnson to Ted Hurst.
23:08The new addition to the wide receiver room. If they can hit the ground running and be basically like they've been every
23:15year, the last 10 years, Bucs are going to be pretty good.
23:18Mike's turn. Let's go to the Jets there at minicamp this week.
23:22New quarterback Geno Smith says it brings him to life to be around the younger players on the rebuilding roster.
23:28His new offensive coordinator, Frank Wright, on his veteran quarterback.
23:31It's hard for me right now to not be overly, what's the right word, effusive with praise.
23:36You know what I mean? But I am just so impressed by Geno.
23:40I cannot express that enough. I know we haven't played any games yet.
23:44We got a long way to go. We got a lot to prove and everybody's got a lot to prove.
23:50But man, he is on point. His preparation is top notch.
23:54His football mind is elite. They are gushing about Geno Smith in Florham Park.
23:58I know we've talked about the Jets as a possibility for Brendan Sorsby, the Texas Tech quarterback who is filing for the supplemental draft.
24:05But you talk to people in Florham Park and they say, we'll figure out the quarterback of the future because the quarterback
24:12of the present is actually in our plans for maybe a little bit longer than you think.
24:17Like this is a multi-year starter in the opinion of the Jets.
24:21I know we're looking at him as a one year bridge, but they're saying what he has shown and what they expected
24:28even before they brought him in leads them to believe they've got themselves a quarterback that should be there at the helm for quite some time.
24:35We'll see. It's got to play well. Another team looking for answers at quarterback, the Atlanta Falcons to a tongue of Iowa
24:42getting the 11 on 11 reps with the ones while Michael Pennix Jr.
24:46recovers from offseason surgery. But his head coach Kevin Stefanski says being a leader is a little bit more than getting a spot on the depth chart.
24:54Leadership is just being authentic to who you are every single day.
24:58And I see that from two. I see that from our guys.
25:02And I know playing the quarterback position, there's some things that come with that in terms of leadership.
25:07And you're the one talking in the huddle. There's only one voice in there.
25:11So that's natural for our quarterback room. All those guys have done that their whole life.
25:16But in terms of leadership for a football team, I think I've witnessed all of our guys just be true to who they are.
25:24And that's the best way to get the most out of your teammates.
25:28And also discussion of leadership is interesting. And hopefully Tua can be the kind of leader for the Atlanta Falcons that maybe
25:34he wasn't always for the Miami Dolphins. But that being said, it doesn't matter as much as him coming in, playing well,
25:41winning the job and getting this team back on its winning ways.
25:45He can be the best kind of leader from the sidelines, from the huddle, wherever it is in the locker room.
25:51If he is not playing really good, high quality quarterback, if he is not leading the Atlanta Falcons to victories, then none
25:58of this is going to matter for Stefanski or anyone else in Atlanta.
26:02Let's go to 49ers leadership where the they currently have Brandon Iook on the reserve slash left squad list, ensuring he's not
26:08going to be signed by another team or be paid by the 49ers is typically reserved for players who are retiring.
26:15The last we heard, Mike, was they wanted to get something in a trip.
26:19Where are we? Well, I'm in Ashburn, Virginia, and I'll use this end of things to tell you that the Washington commanders
26:26are not looking to press for Brandon Iook. And my understanding is if he becomes a free agent, that they will then
26:33take a look at Brandon Iook and the possibility of bringing him in and reuniting him with Jaden Daniels, who was sort
26:39of asked about Iook today when he talked about having a throwing session with his receivers and was asked, is anybody else going to be there?
26:47And he sort of didn't really answer that one.
26:50And so Brandon Iook, a possibility here in Virginia, if the 49ers let him go at some point, that could be before training camp.
26:57But Iook sort of has to force the issue here.
27:00He has to show a willingness to show up in Santa Clara before the 49ers go, whoa, no, no, no, no.
27:07Don't worry. We don't want you getting injured here.
27:09We are then going to release you. And then at that point, I would say it is extremely likely he winds up in Ashburn.
27:17But a couple of steps until we get there.
27:20Now we've got the mental image of Brandon Iook climbing through the substation, the famous substation.

27:31That's been a problem too. Cam Skataboo is back from injury and feeling explosive.

27:47Because this is Cam Skataboo going yard at Brian Byrne's celebrity softball game.
27:51Not only does that, but makes it all the way around the bases and hits his signature celly as well.

28:12I mean, Cam Skataboo living the dream. First of all, glad to see you.
28:16Thanks for joining us here on this edition of the Insiders.
28:20Cam, I want to go back. Before we talk about the Knicks and that particular celebration.
28:24You hit that backflip back in May. A lot of people are probably concerned, but clearly feeling pretty well after recovery from that surgery.
28:32Yeah, I'm feeling great. That's actually the first one I've done since I've been injured.
28:36And I'm starting to feel more confident in it and get back on the field.
28:41So a little backflip isn't going to hurt, you know?
28:44Well, now I feel all kinds of different, Cam, because now you're telling me that's the very first backflip you hit, which
28:51means you made the decision in that moment. It was just the euphoria of going yard in that situation just kind of led you to do it?
28:59Yeah, just seeing my teammates, you know, seeing them cheer me on and knowing that, look, I can show these guys right
29:06now that I'll be ready to go. And being able to do that in front of them, it gave them a little bit of confidence.
29:13So it was a good moment. And speaking of moments, for a California kid to be related to New York sports in
29:20this way and be there last week for this celebration, the city kind of exercising the demons of a 57-year drought, what was that like for you?
29:28Yeah, I mean, it was awesome. You know, I actually haven't been back to the city yet.
29:33I'm trying to stay away because there's a lot going on out there.
29:37But, you know, I became a Knicks fan almost the day I went to New York.
29:42You know, I went to a game during the season and just the atmosphere and the energy that I got from MSG
29:49was something that I loved and something I always want to be around.
29:53So that's something that, you know, I'm going to live on with.
29:57I'm going to be a Knicks fan forever. I was never really a basketball fan, huge in my life, but MSG has
30:03made me a Knicks fan for life. And so you come in and you get to be a part of the atmosphere
30:10and excitement and football in the area. You come in, immediately take the scene by storm, having that success, you and Jackson, in your rookie seasons.
30:18The whirlwind to get to this point, you've had a coaching change.
30:22Has it all settled in yet, or does this all still feel like a part of a rookie year with everything, including the injury?
30:29Yeah, I mean, obviously, I only got to play seven games throughout my whole rookie year.
30:34And, you know, that was kind of hard for me, but I made the best of it, you know, got injured.
30:40And, you know, as soon as I got hurt, I made the best of trying to stay on the Internet and keep
30:47people seeing me and keeping the support coming in.
30:50And, you know, it's been awesome. I still feel like I got a lot to do only in my rookie year.
30:56So I'm just going to look at it this year as like it's my first year again.
31:01You know, I get to do it all over again and work as hard as I can to be the best on the field.
31:09And it kind of makes sense. So at first year, you've got a new head coach, a guy who's had success, won Super Bowls, Matt Nagy.
31:16As your offensive coordinator, what have those changes been like for you?
31:20Yeah, he's been awesome. He's a guy that I know when I talk to him, he's telling me the truth.
31:26He's being honest with me. And he really cares about his players, you know, Coach Harbaugh and Coach Nagy.
31:32I felt nothing but support and love from them and just making sure that, you know, they're always on me about getting back.
31:39And they're starting to see where I'm at in my process and they're starting to trust it.
31:44So they've been really good to me. I trust both of those two along with everybody else on the staff.
31:50And it's been nothing but joy and happiness for me.
31:53Just starting to fall back in love with the game, you know, after an injury for sure.
31:59That joy and happiness, easy for us to think about, Cam, when we watch the way that you celebrate after the play, it's during the play.
32:06Your violent style. How do you feel? Are you adjusting that?
32:10Or when we get back to watching you play football, we're going to see the same Cam Scatterby we've been seeing for years.
32:17Yeah, I mean, it ain't going to change who I am.
32:20I had an injury. You know, it is what it is.
32:24You know, I still got plenty of football left, plenty of life left.
32:28I'm not going to let this little ankle thing bother me.
32:31You know, I'm going to get back running people over like you see on the videos.
32:36It's going to be normal Cam Scatterby from here on out.
32:39Normal Cam, that's what we love to hear. When we've seen you guys working and grinding, of course, the perception of Coach
32:46Harbaugh is there's a lot of work in the process, and we don't know how much of that you can get to see.
32:53Do you get the feeling that when training camp starts, you guys are going to have a much bigger workload than you have in the past?
33:01Oh, yeah, absolutely. I mean, you can already feel it through OTAs.
33:04You know, just the many, many reps we've been through and the conditioning segments and the workouts.
33:10And obviously, I was going through rehab prep and making sure I can get back on the field.
33:15But with all the guys being out there, being able to watch them, seeing them grind together, I kind of hated that
33:22I wasn't able to be a part of it.
33:25But it was good to see them be a part of that because I know when I come back, I'm going to
33:31come back and I'm going to be a part of a team that really likes each other and really cares about each other.
33:38So it's been a grind, but it's going to pay off for sure.
33:42Looking forward to that. And Cam, you get a chance to be in a State Farm commercial.
33:47Tell us what that's like. Yeah, I mean, you know, obviously, all the different State Farm commercials, you see all the big
33:54celebrities and obviously Jake from State Farm. You know, you see him on TV all the time.
33:59You're like, wow, that's pretty cool. And just being able to be a part of it and get my face out there
34:06and, you know, support State Farm as a whole.
34:09So, you know, it's been awesome. Well, it's been awesome having you.
34:12We hope that when you are able to get back in the city, you can enjoy that.
34:18Or you can enjoy your, you know, celebrity time with Giancarlo Esposito, Spike Lee, John Totoro, those guys.

34:49Well, this good. You want to talk about the franchise history, the storied history of the Washington Commanders franchise.
34:55He's on his way to having more 1,000-yard receiving seasons than anyone in the history, including the Hall of Famer, Art Monk,
35:02doing it with guys like Taylor Heineke and Sam Howell as starting quarterbacks.
35:06Terry McLaurin, very good at going one-on-one with our Mike Garofalo.
35:09Here at Commander's Receiver, Terry McLaurin. Terry, I mean, whether it's coaches here, front office, staffers, media, they say you should see
35:16what kind of spring Terry McLaurin has had. And just the mentality, the personality, everything's coming out, the leadership.
35:22How good has this spring been for you? It's been amazing, like being a part of the entire process this year.
35:28This has been a new year for everybody, including myself.
35:31Just from last year didn't go how any of us expected.
35:34But that's the thing. Each year in the league is new, and you got to take a new year approach.
35:41So for myself, like I always take a day-one approach coming into each year, but this year is just the focus of
35:47bringing more of myself, not just more of my physical talent to the team, but my leadership, my energy, and making sure
35:54guys feel that on a day-in, day-out basis. And it's been fun when you got guys who are bought in, who are
36:01having fun, and we really built a really great brotherhood during this OTA time.
36:05So, you know, we just want to finish up this last day strong and go into the summer feeling good so we can throw a good camp.
36:13Last year was about taking care of your business.
36:16So you put that behind you, now it's all about football.
36:19We can see that clearly. This year you've got, yeah, you have the fifth pound.
36:24You got a new offensive coordinator in David Blau.
36:27But he's been around. You know, it's not like a new face.
36:30It's a new system, though. Give me the grades on what he's done so far this spring.
36:35Man, Blau's done a great job of just implementing this offense.
36:39I love how he has explained things in a way that makes sense.
36:43A lot of our route concepts, a lot of our run game, marry together.
36:47So when we're hearing the play calls in the huddle, last year we were a lot on signal base.
36:53So the communication is going to be that much more important in the huddle.
36:57I think Jaden's done a great job picking up the offense.
37:00He's communicating great in the huddle. But Blau has done a great job with just giving us his expectations and having fun.
37:07He's a master communicator. You know, you'd be surprised that this is just his first year being a coordinator.
37:13But if you've been around the last few years, you know what he's capable of.
37:17And so it doesn't catch us by surprise that he's in this opportunity.
37:21But we're looking forward just to bring his offense to life.
37:25I think I can speak for a lot of us.
37:28None of us have really been a part of a day one offense where you're building something from the ground up.
37:34So Blau's going to be a great coach in this league for a long time.
37:39So to be a part of his precipice offense, like, that's been amazing so far.
37:43So I just want to be the go-to guy that Jaden can trust, that our teammates can trust, that Blau can trust, and just continue to make plays.
37:52You talked about Jaden in the huddle. He's got to spit out some longer play calls this year.
37:57I know that that's a big part of what you're looking for in the spring here is that communication, get to the
38:04line of scrimmage, make all the – how's he been in the huddle all the way up to the snap?
38:10Man, he's been amazing. Like, and the thing about Jaden, like, he's always been prepared.
38:15When he first got here in 24, like, the first day install, he was already running the offense.
38:20I think he has a great job. He does a great job of mastering the communication of the offense.
38:26He's a really quick learner, and he likes to have fun as well.
38:30I think the biggest thing that's standing out about Jaden, you're starting to hear his voice even more.
38:36He's always had the leadership qualities, but you're hearing him give the expectations of what he wants out of the route running
38:42from the receivers, what he expects from the O-line, and in the meeting rooms where we're talking about it after watching the
38:49film, he's been very good in communication. So we've gotten a lot of great work with him, and it's just great to
38:56see the way he's grown as a player and as a leader.
38:59And when you have that kind of talent and that kind of leadership mixed with his work ethic, you know, you have
39:06a great chance with a quarterback like that. Can't wait to see it all displayed on the field once we get to training camp.
39:13You get some golfing. I heard you shot an 83 the other day at Congressional.
39:18Birdie on 18. Another fist bump for that one.
39:21Two birdies. I had two birdies. Now, I'll tell y'all this.
39:24On 10, if you've ever been to Congressional, there was about 15 people that were watching me.
39:29You know what I mean? I shanked it into the water.
39:33I could own that. I shanked it into the water.
39:36But the thing is, it's all about how you finish.
39:39I came down to 18, had a 7 iron from 185, put it within 5, knock it down.
39:44My team won the tournament. Shoot or shoot, players play.
39:47You know what I mean? Yeah. So we're going to keep it going.
39:51Now that OTA is about to wrap up, I'm going to get a few golf rounds in between my training.
39:57I'm trying to break 80. That's the goal, but I'll take that.

41:58I don't have one particular moment for me. It's really just the entire Mr.
42:02Met experience. I'm a big Mets fan. You really love big old baseball-headed Mr.

42:09And on Mother's Day, Mrs. Met gets a special day, as she should, as all mothers do.
42:14It's really a whole loving Met family. And the Mets haven't had a lot of wins this year, but they do have a great mascot, so that's something.
