Bucky Irving's 2024 rookie season is now viewed as an outlier by Tampa Bay management. Irving lacks the size to earn a lead back's volume going forward, which is why the Buccaneers are concerned about his ability to sustain the role in 2026. This concern contributed to the team's decision to move on from the backfield situation.PositiveValueJun 25, 2026
Ranked #15 in Dave Kluge's dynasty RB rankings, with +2 deviation from Footballguys consensus which ranks him #17; Kluge values Irving higher than the staff consensus.NegativeInjuryJun 24, 2026
Irving missed seven straight games last season (Weeks 5-12) with ankle and shoulder injuries and had offseason surgery to repair the shoulder. Head coach Todd Bowles told reporters he expected Irving to be back later "in the summer or fall," though multiple reporters and GM Jason Licht suggest a summer return is more likely. The fact that Bowles mentioned the possibility of a fall return is an eyebrow-raiser. Irving declined significantly from his rookie season: 1,122 rushing yards at 5.4 yards per carry in 2024 to 588 yards at 3.4 yards per carry in 2025. He is being drafted as RB20 in early Round 4, with his ADP reflecting last year's points-per-game finish and 2026 Footballguys projection. Footballguys' Matt Waldman notes that at 5-9 and 192 pounds, Irving is small, and his body hasn't held up to playing big.
