Detroit Lions re-signing tight end Tyler Conklin after a brief release; Conklin had been repping as TE3 throughout training camp and is returning to the roster (either 53-man or practice squad). His balanced skill set adds depth to the tight end room and enables the Lions to run heavy 13 personnel (three tight end sets), opening up the playbook and providing security against injury. The quick re-signing suggests this may have been the plan all along.

Conklin was cut from the Lions' initial 53-man roster despite being a veteran tight end who frequently repped ahead of Jackson Meeks and looked solid as TE3 behind Sam LaPorta and Brock Wright. The source notes this was unexpected given the Lions' reliance on two- and three-tight end formations and their past struggles when LaPorta and Wright were injured. The Lions may have made this move to avoid Conklin's fully guaranteed salary if he was on the active roster in Week 1, with plans to add him to the practice squad and elevate him later.
