Jacobs was arrested for an incident involving his ex-girlfriend, and in August, he was charged with two misdemeanors – one for battery, one for criminal damage to property. On Aug. 30, the NFL placed the eighth-year running back on the commissioner's exempt list, a form of paid administrative leave that prohibits players from practicing or attending games.

Jacobs on exempt list since Aug. 30; faces likely six-game suspension pending NFL investigation completion.

Jacobs has been on the NFL's commissioner's exempt list since Aug. 30 following charges of misdemeanor battery and criminal damage to property related to a May arrest involving his ex-girlfriend. He pleaded no contest in September and reached a plea deal; he was convicted of battery and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine plus costs, and reached a deferred judgment agreement on the criminal damage charge requiring 12 months of compliance (no further criminal acts, no contact with victim, supervision, counseling, restitution). The exempt list prohibits him from practicing or attending games. A standard suspension for a domestic violence case is six games under the NFL-NFLPA collective bargaining agreement, though suspensions can be longer depending on severity. The NFL's investigation is ongoing and hinges partly on accessing video of the incident; a judge denied the victim's request to permanently seal evidence on Sept. 24, allowing the NFL to potentially procure the video via legal means. Any games missed on the exempt list would count retroactively toward a suspension. If suspended for six games, Jacobs could return as soon as Week 7 (Oct. 25 vs. Detroit Lions).
