The Phinsider on Malik Willis
From the article
Malik Willis signed a 3 year, $67,500,000 contract with $45,000,000 guaranteed... the Dolphins are set to have the 3rd highest amount of cap space at $110,315,175... Sully did the CORRECT thing by swinging the bat on Willis.
STACKED’s take
Willis deal was financially prudent despite poor play; Dolphins have cap flexibility even with his contract.
The Earl defends the Dolphins' decision to sign Willis on a 3-year, $67.5M deal ($45M guaranteed, $22.5M AAV) as financially sound and strategically correct despite poor on-field performance. Willis carries a $5.68M cap hit in 2026 and $25.96M in 2027, but the Dolphins will have the 3rd-highest cap space ($110.3M+) even with dead money for Tua, Bradley Chubb, and Austin Jackson's void year. The Earl argues Willis was reasonably cost-effective compared to pre-FA estimates over $40M/year, similar to the Jets' Justin Fields deal, and that the Dolphins were familiar with him from his Green Bay background. He notes that Quinn Ewers, the alternative, was considerably worse in camp and preseason. The Earl acknowledges Willis's window for hope is closing fast after poor recent performances but maintains the front office made the correct move by acquiring a young QB with upside without overcommitting long-term.
