Yahoo Sports NFL on Caleb Williams

Williams spotted short of first down, setting up Vrabel's clock management play.

Bears quarterback Caleb Williams was spotted just short of the first down on the play before the Patriots' intentional offside penalty with 1:56 remaining in the fourth quarter. This close spot set up the third-and-inches situation that prompted Vrabel's clock management strategy. Kirk Herbstreit noted that the third-and-inches situation, combined with clock considerations, actually hurt the Patriots' chances compared to if the Bears had achieved a first down.
